The story of the Holy Spirit Fortress in Mineralni Bani.
This week in the column "Curious about the district", initiated by the regional governor of Haskovo Dr. Stefka Zdravkova, we will take you to the municipality of Mineralni Bani and tell you about the fortress "Holy Spirit". The archeological site "St. Duh ”in the village of Mineralni Bani was discovered and studied in the period 1966-1970 by the famous archaeologist Dimcho Aladzhov. Throughout its thousand-year history, the fortress has been completed and remodeled, but it has nevertheless preserved its appearance and preserved a part of the cultural history of generations of inhabitants of our lands. It survived the blows of the Gothic invasions and Byzantium, to be completely deserted at the end of the 14th century, when the Balkan Peninsula fell under Ottoman rule. Her research found life from four main construction periods, covering the period from the II to the XIV century. During the different epochs the fortress walls were repaired on the old foundations, so that the plan of the fortress was generally unchanged for about 1000 years. The building materials used were different: from precisely carved stone squares (II c.) And quarry stone (III-IV c.), Applied in places together with rows of bricks to ordinary river stone (IX-XI c.), Welded with white or red mortar. It has an irregular multifaceted shape defined by the terrain. The fortress has one main entrance from the south and two small openings (pottery) on the west and east walls. The platforms of the fortress walls were reached by massive staircases, adjacent to the south and west walls. The fortress walls, which follow the natural outlines of the slope, are 2 m thick and enclose the space of about 5 decares. The defense of the fortress was reinforced by four large rectangular towers, rebuilt several times and finally turned into homes. Along the fortress walls, inside, a number of residential and commercial premises were built, in which a large number of objects were found: pottery, agricultural tools, coins, weapons and other objects from the Roman and late Roman eras and from the Bulgarian Middle Ages. The current name comes from the chapel of the Holy Spirit built on a low hill, where local Christians have gathered annually for centuries. There is a legend that detachments of the troops of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen II and the Epirus despot Theodore Comnenus in 1230 started battles near this fortress. According to their information, the militant tribe of the Pechenegs, who attacked the Byzantine Empire in the 11th century, was resisted here. The ancient fortress "Holy Spirit" was restored in 2008, and in 2011 the foundations of a chapel were laid, built entirely with donations. For many years the chapel "St. Spirit ”is closed when in 2018 it is lit and open for visits.

Nikolay Ovcharov: Mineral Baths is part of Via Rodopica
Toplikos Fortress is only 20 km from the tourist route, which we called Via Rodopica. My big goal is to the route Zlatograd, Perperikon, the Temple of Orpheus near Tatul, "St. John the Forerunner ”in Kardzhali, to add Haskovo and Mineral Baths. This was said by Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov, who was at the opening of the landscaped fortress Toplikos on the hill St. Spirit over Mineral Baths. Toplikos is a connecting link, especially since the "City of the Sun" is nearby near Angel Voivoda, which is still an object still in development. The municipality has been finding funds for several years to open this otherwise quite inaccessible city, but on the other hand this "City of the Sun" has a prospect no less than that of Perperikon, Ovcharov replacement. There are other very important monuments in the area, such as gold mines, which are similar to those at Stremtsi under Perperikon. These are some of the largest ancient gold mines in the Eastern Rhodopes, and all this brings potential for tourism, the professor added. The "City of the Sun" has also become known for its largest niches, with hopes that in time they will be properly exposed so as to attract more tourists to the area known for its mineral water.
